Pixel Art – Week 16: Pixel Dailies

I always feared taking references from other artists. It feels like I’m cheating on art and I wasn’t using my imagination.
I was that stupid person that won’t use reference because of pride. I now learned that having references is extremely important. It serves as a reference point on where you did wrong and what to improve on.
At the same time, it can be used to get ideas from other great artists.

Although I have my references, I can’t properly use them. I don’t know the fundamentals of arts that well, and I was winging it. I tried looking for references to make things easier, but my lack of skills can’t translate what I’m going for.
Therefore, this artwork was a complete mess. It looks weird as well.

I still committed the same mistake as I did in the previous prompt, I wasn’t able to completely translate the references that I have. I wasn’t able to complete one of the objects in this prompt. I was too lazy and demotivated to continue because of my inability.

For this day, I was browsing through YouTube and stumbled on Ethan Becker’s YouTube Channel. He emphasized the use of professional references, confident lines, and breaking down of photos and art made by professionals.
I watched it and I felt motivated. I might as well apply what I learned, right? Then there it is.
I managed to completely make this one by understanding the shapes that a tie has. I was so engrossed on breaking down the art that time passed so fast. Although this prompt was simple, I was having a lot of fun learning the basic shapes that this object contains.
Here are the photos of the breakdown:
When it comes to art, there really isn’t much guesswork after all. You only need a reference and a critical analysis of the reference to make something good and satisfying.
I’m still new to this so I need to refine and personalize my professional reference breakdown so I could improve faster.
