A Returner’s Magic Should be Special: Review

Great start destroyed by a mediocre ending.

I binged read this novel in the span of 2 days.

I read the manhwa adaptation first and decided to continue the experience reading the webnovel.

I had high expectations because I enjoyed the start of the story, but as I said earlier it was bad.

What made me enjoy the earlier parts of the novel was because of the main character.

The main character was a returner from a bad future and decided to fix things. It’s not an original concept but it’s what I felt reading at the time.

What I really enjoyed most about this novel was the main character’s humble and decisive attitude.

If there was an minor antagonist that tries to provoke him in a fight, he doesn’t bother and just laugh it off.

Why? He knew the big picture. He knew what the future was like. He knew how scary the future can be.

He knew it was petty to fight. He knew it was a waste of time.

So, he ignored them and focused on his goal instead. Actions speak louder than words so let the result speak for itself.

The middle part of the story was still okay at best. There were some flaws but they weren’t as glaring.

My problem with it was the last phase of the novel.

All the built up hype and all the excitement from the earlier chapters in preparation for the next big arc would end in short chapters.

What was that all about? I don’t get it. It spent all the time making the ending a big thing then ended just like that.

It’s so anti-climactic.

Another would be that the main antagonists of the novel. I don’t know. It felt like those guys came out of nowhere. It’s like they suddenly decided to pop out.

In his past life before the return, the main antagonists weren’t even felt. But, in his return those guys were extremely prominent. They have armies, the have fucking weirdos who did major things like assassinating multiple rulers of countries.

I just don’t understand why these events weren’t present in his past life. I think they do, but they didn’t pose any significance? Whatever. I decided to tolerate and stay for a while.

I’m after for the character development for the story anyway.

Speaking of character development, it was okay. I guess? I don’t know. Honestly, it wasn’t really impactful for me.

The main party of the main character was something I was bothered about. After a certain arc, it felt like the other members weren’t relevant or significant anymore.

They felt like baggage that the MC needed to carry not because they aren’t useful but they were already established to be together.

The other party members didn’t contribute much — story-wise — to the latter parts of the novel. I kinda felt bad for them since I believe that they could have had major roles but didn’t.

Well, that’s it. I have more to say but these were the glaring ones. Also, I don’t want to spend too much time “ranting” since I focused more on the negatives than the positives.
