Reading Another HFY ‘Must Read’

So, here I am again with another story from the HFY subreddit. It was located at the ‘Must Read’ tab, so I thought maybe I’m onto something good.

I was right. I was into for a treat.

A Simple Report

When I read the story the first thing I noticed was the unique perspective. The story started with a recording.

We’re in the perspective of a deductor who interviews people involved in a murder event.

What I really find interesting in this story was that there was no narrator describing the scenes.

It was the characters who made the imagery vivid, most especially the second interviewee.

Honestly, the story felt like watching a person doing a news interview with some random bloke. It felt good, and so real.

Each interview is a fresh set of eyes and dialogue is never the same. You can easily distinguish the person who’s talking.

The first interviewee is riddled with rage, the second one is filled with energy and anxiety, and the last one radiates annoyance and impatience.

It’s crazy.

To me, this story is like someone telling you a long ass story in a get together. It’s awesome.

However, I did have trouble reading it though.

Yes, it was enjoyable, but it was hard to keep track about the characters in the second interview.

There are too many names jumping around and it’s hard to see which person did which action, you know? I think it’s just a skill issue in my part.

My Takeaways:

  • Dialogue can be exclusively used for world building.
  • Dialogue can be used to leave loose ends for the story to pick up on. It can be used to leave clues for readers to ponder on.
  • Dialogue can easily show the personality of the character most especially in a stressful situation.
  • There isn’t too much of a plot. However, the story only involved one event. Wherein, we got three unique perspectives on that event.

Hey! If you have short story recommendations for me please share it please. I would love to read them.
